Showing the facilities and services of the Amazon Backpackers Hostel in Manaus in the Rua 10 de Julho near the Opera House.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

To give backpackers the possibility to preview the facilities and services and offer them also directions to reach to the hostel in downtown Manaus.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

In September 2008. It was the website of our associated Tour Operator Amazon Backpacker Tours. www.amazonbackpackers.com.br

How did you decide on a name for your website?

Retrival from company name

What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?

Transparency and complete price list.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

Keeping it for income.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

Investment was with the help of a German guy, webmaster of www.amazonaslife.com, approx. USD 200.- for design of the website, USD 30.- for registration and hosting (1 year) and USD 70.- for promotion services - in total USD 300.- This is resulting monthly in 3 additional contacts and 1 additional sale, worth approx. USD 30.- each.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Site promotion. Handling of a lot of spam mail.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Handling of spam mail.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Registration in hostel related sites and reservation services (such as hostelworld, gomio).

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

I thought having a website will generate automatically traffic, but this is not the case.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
