I know it's pretty late for this kind of post since Halloween has just passed, but it's better to be late than to not have posted anything at all. People typically spend Halloween at their homes, giving chocolates and candies in the first place, not inside some haunted town known for witches.
I'm talking about the city of Salem in Essex County, Mass. It used to be an important seaport and industrial center of the state. It hosts the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, whose task is to protect the city's famed waterfront.
What is perhaps the defining cultural icon of the city are the witches due to their role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. It was a series of trials made to prosecute individuals who were suspected back then of being witches. Today, there aren't any of these witches anymore, naturally, but they have been really helpful to the city's economy. If you will see, police cars have witch logos, a local public high school is named after witches, while Salem High School's football team was called The Witches. The witch served like some sort of mascot for the entire city. In fact, the association is so noticeable that the city turned into the default film shooting location for witch movies.
The most popular destination in the city will be the Salem Witch Museum. Here, you will get to see some exhibits showing how the aimless persecutions were like in the 17th century. Looking at the exhibits, one will sometimes wonder how were the people back then were able to kill their fellow countrymen without any hesitations. There you will realize where the bigots of today actually came from.
Well enough of the trials. If you are looking for some late Halloween fun, the city of Salem surely is the place to go. You might have missed the Halloween shows, but it is also never too late to get spooked!
