Glasgow
Please give us a short summary of your website?
Full A to Z listings of destinations from Glasgow Airport. We also have all latest news from Glasgow Airport regarding new routes and terminal expansion.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
To get people away from flying via London and fly direct from Glasgow as the flights are available.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
September 2004, it was an older version of the existing site, although since then the site has been total overhauled.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
FlyGlasgow is pretty relevant for what people visiting the site will be looking for, its also an easy to remember name.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
In away we are similar to Expedia, Las Minute etc but what makes us unique is that we specialise in flights to and from Glasgow, we also do a lot to promote tourism in Glasgow.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
In the longer term, get even more direct international flights operating from Glasgow’s two airports, again taking away the need to fly via London and other hubs.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Financially the site has been very successful and from feedback I have received, the general public love it as they now realise you can fly direct to over 200 worldwide destinations from Glasgow, many of my customers previously flew via London even though there was a direct flight, they just didn’t know about it till they came across FlyGlasgow.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
But for unlimited funds, it would be to get a Boeing 737 sized aircraft to operate our own flights from Glasgow to European cities such as Madrid, Brussels, Milan etc.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Without a doubt.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Building the new site was a very time consuming exercise, but by far the hardest thing to do is market a website, like someone said to me “a website with no visitors is like a newspaper with no readers”. I found this inspiring to maximise my advertising for the site.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Definitely the marketing of the site.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Links in my signature on forums.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Its far more time consuming that I could have ever imagined when I first had the idea four years ago.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The website has been going for around three years. The website is already profitable but if that ever changed for the worse, then firstly I would sort it out and I would keep the site going as the satisfaction I get from running it is very high.
The most rewarding thing about running my site?
Knowing I am getting people off the London shuttle and onto direct international flights from Glasgow Airport.
